Petaluma is located 32 miles north of San Francisco in the Sonoma County Wine Country. The city is an ideal location to base an exploration of the county's more than 195 wineries, redwoods, and the dramatic Sonoma coast.

Petaluma is one of the oldest cities in California with one of the best-preserved Historic Downtown Areas on the National Register of Historic Places. Many brick and iron fronted buildings that were built in the 1890s are the focal point of the district. Surrounding the downtown are two other neighborhood historical districts with large Victorians and quaint bungalows that add to the city's charm.

The recently re-invigorated town and updated “Theater District,” located near the Petaluma River, boasts a multi-screen movie theater, riverfront living, fine dining and shopping. The city has also updated an old railroad freight building into the Petaluma Arts Center, located next door to the restored old train station, now the Visitor Center.

Petaluma holds many family-oriented events throughout the year. In April, the annual Butter & Eggs Day Parade & Celebration includes the “Cutest Little Chick Contest” and is held downtown. Other events include the Salute to American Graffiti in May, the Sonoma-Marin Fair in June, the Rivertown Revival in July, and a Taste of Petaluma in August.

Petaluma is also noted for its many pumpkin patches, farmers’ markets, antique fairs, historic tours, and river cruises. A strong supporter of the arts, Petaluma has numerous art galleries and many annual events. The July Art and Garden Festival and the September Art in the Park are both very popular. For two weekends in October, area artists open their studios and display new works during the Sonoma Countywide ARTrails Open Studio Tours. Performing arts are also available at the Cinnabar Theater, McNear’s Mystic Theatre & Music Hall, the Phoenix Theater and at the annual Petaluma Music Festival.

For those wishing to spend time with nature, Petaluma parks include Tolay Regional Park, Helen Putnam Regional Park, Adobe State Historic Park and Shollenberger Park.
