Mill Valley

Mill Valley, located approximately 10 miles north of the Golden Gate Bridge, is nestled beneath Mount Tamalpais and is surrounded by open-space and Richardson Bay. This idyllic location with easy access to San Francisco also boasts Redwood forests, Mt. Tamalpais foothills, creek beds and San Francisco Bay views, adding to the vast appeal.

In addition to the scenic beauty, Mill Valley is known for being an upscale destination with a bohemian flair. Once a small hamlet attracting artists, writers, and musicians, Mill Valley’s artistic heritage is evident by the many popular events in town. The Mill Valley Fall Arts Festival is one of Mill Valley’s oldest events, dating back to 1957. Theatre is also widely supported, as Mill Valley is home to the Marin Theatre Company, the Mountain Play, Shakespeare in Old Mill Park and 142 Throckmorton Theatre, which has been known to draw the likes of Robin Williams and Dana Carvey as surprise guests to its Tuesday Night Comedy series.

Early populations also included the San Francisco elite who summered in Mill Valley; many of those small vacation homes still stand. Other common residential architecture includes California Craftsman, Brown Shingle, Bungalow and Cottage. A stroll through the downtown area will bring you past many original or long-standing commercial buildings. The main square, Lytton Square, was built to emulate a European-style open-air town center. On any given weekend, locals flock there to walk their dogs or watch their kids ride bikes and scooters while enjoying coffee from the landmark Depot Bookstore & Café. Downtown you will also find chic clothing boutiques, coffee shops, restaurants and the Sequoia Theatre, the birthplace of the Mill Valley Film Festival. There are also several popular restaurants in town, including D’Angelos, the Dipsea Café and the Buckeye Road House.

Mill
Valley is a very active community with Mt. Tamalpais and Richardson Bay as her playground, making many recreational activities possible including kayaking, cycling, hiking and trail-running. The oldest trail race in America, the Dipsea Race, takes off each June and the course runs from downtown Mill Valley to Stinson Beach. The city’s bike/pedestrian path runs through Mill Valley along the wetlands and into Sausalito. For further recreation, there is also the Mill Valley Community Center, a state-of-the-art facility, the Boyle Park Tennis Courts and the Mill Valley Golf Course – the only municipal golf course in the county.
